Introduction:
The sweet potato, also called batata, comes from South America and only grows in warm regions. Its taste is reminiscent of carrots. When cooked, they have a sweet and nutty aroma.
Use/Preparation:
Sweet potatoes can be boiled, baked, deep-fried or fried like regular potatoes and are suitable for making sweet potato puree, gnocchi, soups, casseroles or sweet potato fries.
Health:
Sweet potatoes are a rich vegetable due to their relatively high sugar content. But despite the high starch and sugar content, they only cause blood sugar levels to rise slowly. They also contain plenty of minerals and vitamins such as beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body, vitamin E and potassium.
Alternatives:
Pumpkins and carrots have a similar sweet, slightly nutty taste. Because of their texture, they can be prepared like sweet potatoes. Normal potatoes, beetroot or parsnips are also suitable.
