Spirulina blue-green algae (Spirulina platensis)

Introduction:

Spirulina blue-green algae is a freshwater algae that grows in alkaline subtropical mineral lakes.

Use/Preparation:

Spirulina is sold as a dietary supplement.

Health:

The "superfood algae" is said to strengthen the immune system, alleviate allergies, prevent cardiovascular diseases and cancer. It is rich in the plant pigment chlorophyll, protein, B vitamins and iron. Among other things, it is said to eliminate heavy metals, lower cholesterol levels and also protect against cancer. However, the positive nutritional and medical effects are controversial. When buying, care should also be taken to ensure that the product has been tested for exposure to toxins and heavy metals.

Alternatives:

Chlorella is an algae that has similar nutritional values to spirulina blue-green algae. Matcha, finely ground green tea that is rich in antioxidants and other health-promoting nutrients, is also suitable as an alternative. Kale can be used as an antioxidant- and iron-rich leafy vegetable like spirulina, e.g. in smoothies.
