Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

Introduction:

Oregano is also known as thorn or wild marjoram. The spice is particularly popular in Mediterranean cuisine. It has an intense, finely tangy flavour.

Use/Preparation:

The spice is found in Mediterranean cuisine in pizza, tomato sauce, antipasti, gyros, Greek salad, pasta, potato, meat and fish dishes.

Health:

Because of its anti-inflammatory effect, oregano is used as a remedy and natural antibiotic for respiratory diseases and digestive problems. It should only be consumed in commercial quantities as the pyrrolizidine alkaloid it contains can damage the liver.

Alternatives:

Marjoram is similar to oregano in taste, but is less spicy and somewhat sweeter. Other Mediterranean herbs such as basil, tarragon, rosemary or sage can also be used instead of oregano.
