Introduction:
The capsule fruits, also called pods, are hexagonal and have a light to dark green skin. Visually, they resemble a cross between courgettes and chillies. They taste mild, tart, sour and spicy.
Use/Preparation:
Okra tastes good in curries, stews, meat dishes or spicy vegetable pans, in casseroles and in soups.
Health:
The vegetables are especially prized for their gut-friendly properties. They are rich in fibre and help to eliminate harmful substances from the body. The mucilage found in okras is also said to have a positive effect on intestinal health. In addition, the pods are rich in vitamin C, provitamin A and the minerals calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron and zinc.
Alternatives:
Since okra tastes like green beans, they can serve as a good alternative. Green peppers or courgettes are also good.
