Nectarine (Prunus persica var. Nucipersica)

Introduction:

Nectarines are stone fruits that belong to the peach genus. Unlike the furry peach, nectarines have a smooth skin. A distinction is made between the white-fleshed, somewhat sweeter and juicier, and the yellow-fleshed varieties.

Use/Preparation:

Nectarines are a real treat on their own as a snack between meals or as a small dessert. But the fruits also taste delicious in fruit salads, on cakes and tarts, as compote, jam, dessert or in chutneys.

Health:

Besides the minerals selenium, zinc and magnesium, nectarines contain niacin (vitamin B3), lots of vitamin C as well as polyphenols, which have an anti-inflammatory effect and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Alternatives:

Peaches are very similar to nectarines in appearance and taste as well as nutritional values. But plums, mirabelles, apricots and mango also taste sweet and fruity and can be used as alternatives.
