Introduction:
As the name suggests, the honeydew melon tastes honey-sweet. It is yellow and smooth on the outside and greenish-white on the inside. Although it belongs to the sugar melons, it consists of about 85% water and is therefore low in sugar.
Use/Preparation:
The flesh tastes best raw and chilled and is suitable for smoothies, salads, as an accompaniment to savoury dishes, in curries and sauces.
Health:
Honeydew melons are rich in vitamins and minerals, including provitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and iron. The contained secondary plant ingredient lycopene is considered to be anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory.
Alternatives:
Other melon varieties can be used as substitutes. Cantaloupe melon has a similar sweetness and juicy, aromatic texture to honeydew melons and is also rich in vitamins and minerals. Mangoes, which also contain lycopene, are also suitable alternatives.
