Introduction:
Hemp seeds are the fruits of the hemp crop. The small, nutty tasting seeds have a brownish colour and are often referred to as a superfood due to their nutrient content.
Use/Preparation:
Hulled and unhulled hemp seeds are commercially available. They are suitable for muesli, porridge, pastries such as bread, biscuits, energy balls, dips, spreads, or for salads and pesto. Milk substitutes are also made from the seeds.
Health:
Hemp seeds provide high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which can contribute to heart health. The high fibre content aids digestion.
Alternatives:
Chia seeds or flax seeds are also good sources of vegetable protein, fibre and omega-3 fatty acids. Similar to hemp seeds, they can be used in smoothies, yoghurt, baked goods, muesli or porridge.
