Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)

Introduction:

Blue mussels, also known as pile mussels, have a grey to violet-blue shell and yellowish flesh that has a creamy consistency and tastes mildly aromatic and slightly salty.

Use/Preparation:

The mussels can be cooked, smoked, baked, in sauces, salads, or on pizza, with pasta dishes, or enjoyed raw when fresh from the coast.

Health:

The meat of mussels is high in protein and provides vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. These contribute to normal heart function. Minerals such as iron, phosphorus and zinc are also present. However, due to the fact that mussels constantly filter seawater, pollutants also accumulate.

Alternatives:

Mussels can be substituted for other mussels or seafood in some dishes.
