Introduction:
Aniseed is an ancient medicinal and spice plant. The fruits, which look like seeds, taste strongly aromatic, sweetish and liquorice-like.
Use/Preparation:
The strong flavouring power of aniseed gives bread, Christmas biscuits and desserts a fine taste. The spice is mainly used in oriental and Asian cuisine, tea, schnapps and liqueurs (sambuca, raki, arak, pastis, ouzo, absynth, etc.).
Health:
Aniseed preparations loosen stuck mucus from the bronchial tubes and promote its removal. Aniseed also has a stimulating, digestive and antispasmodic effect. In aromatherapy it is used against headaches.
Alternatives:
Fennel and star anise have a similar aroma.
