Gram-negative and Gram positive bacteria have dictinct chemical and physical properties of their cell walls. Gram-negative cells have a thinner peptidoglycan layer. Gram-positive cells have a thick layer of peptidoglycan in the cell wall and are more resistant to environmental factors.
