Blue mussels

Blue mussels are available either fresh or as canned food. Food labelled as “seafood” or “Frutti di Mare” usually contains blue mussels. Many southern European dishes contain mussels, e.g. “Paella”.
Sometimes, industrially produced mussel soups don’t contain blue mussels at all – you should carefully read the list of ingredients when purchasing them.
Possible cross reactions: Mussels belong to the so called molluscs and are high in tropomyosin, the main allergen of the dust mite. People who are allergic or sensitised to dust mites can react to mussels without ever having eaten one.
