Introduction:
Goji berries are the fruits of the common or Chinese fenugreek and belong to the nightshade family. In China, the berry is also called the "berry of happiness". The small elongated to egg-shaped, bright red berries are visually reminiscent of rose hips. Due to their high nutrient content, goji berries are considered a superfood. They are usually sold dried, as juice, in smoothies or as powder. Depending on the variety, they are very sour or fruity-sweet.
Use/Preparation:
Mostly the dried fruits are used. They can be added to muesli, mixed into trail mix, served in salads or bowls. They are also tasty in jams, biscuits, bars, energy balls and cakes.
Health:
Berries contain plenty of vitamin C, calcium and iron. The nutrient content is highest in the fresh berries and decreases with processing. People taking blood thinners should enjoy the berries with caution. Studies have found interactions with these medications.
Alternatives:
Other vitamin C-rich berries such as blueberries, raspberries or cranberries can be used as alternatives.
