Muskweed (Corchorus olitorius)

Introduction:

Muskweed is also known as musk mallow or Egyptian spinach. It belongs to the mallow family and is originally native to tropical regions such as India, China and Africa, but is now cultivated in many parts of the world.

Use/Preparation:

In cooking, mainly the young leaves and the seeds are used. The leaves can be prepared like spinach and eaten raw in salads, or steamed as a vegetable, in soups or stews, and also enjoyed as a tea. The seeds are often roasted and used as a spice.

Health:

Muskweed is rich in iron, calcium, vitamin C and antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals. Traditionally, the herb is used to support the immune system, relieve digestive problems and promote skin health.

Alternatives:

Spinach has a similar taste, is rich in iron and vitamin C and can be prepared in the same way.
