Benzoic acid (E 210)

Introduction:

Benzoic acid is a chemical compound which, as a preservative, inhibits the growth of fungi and yeasts. Foods preserved with benzoic acid are labelled with the words "preserved" or "with preservative" and the corresponding name "Benzoic acid (E210)".

Use/Preparation:

Benzoic acid is used as a preservative for certain foods and cosmetics. It is mainly used in acidic foodstuffs such as soft drinks containing fruit juice, pickled preserves, mayonnaise, delicatessen salads, jams, jellies, olives or aspic. Naturally, benzoic acid is present in very small amounts in milk, honey and some fruits, especially soft fruits.

Health:

In the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), the preservative benzoic acid can form benzene, which is classified as carcinogenic and harmful to germ cells. In rare cases, however, benzoic acid can also trigger intolerance reactions in the form of asthma attacks or rhinitis.
