Juniper berries (Juniperus communis)

Introduction:

Juniper berries are the fruits of the evergreen juniper, a type of cypress. Their aromatic, bittersweet and slightly resinous flavour enhances many dishes and is the characteristic ingredient of gin.

Use/Preparation:

Dried, the berries are used as a spice. Because of their soothing effect on flatulence, juniper berries are often used with cabbage and high-fat dishes. Game dishes and sauerkraut in particular benefit from the fine aroma of the juniper berry.

Health:

The berries have been shown to have a positive effect on the digestive system and urinary tract. Consumption should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as in cases of kidney disease.

Alternatives:

Allspice grains have a similar taste.
