Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa)

Introduction:

Brazil nuts are the seeds of the Brazil nut tree, which comes from the tropical rainforests of South America. They taste pleasantly oily, slightly earthy, sweet and almond-like.

Use/Preparation:

Brazil nuts are especially delicious raw or roasted as a snack, but they can also be used in pastries, sweets, cakes, muffins, muesli or in various dishes (e.g. curries or meat dishes).

Health:

Brazil nuts are very nutritious due to their high content of fat, vegetable protein and vital substances. They contain vitamin E, B vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. They also contain a lot of selenium. The trace element is a component of antioxidant enzymes and is thus important for cell renewal and the immune system.

Alternatives:

Due to the almond-like taste of Brazil nuts, almonds are suitable as a substitute. But other nuts such as walnuts, pecans or hazelnuts can also be used. Nut allergy sufferers should resort to seeds and kernels such as pumpkin or sunflower seeds. These are also rich in valuable nutrients.
