Lovage (Levisticum officinale)

Introduction:

Lovage, also known as Maggi herb, adds a fine spicy note to hearty dishes. As a medicinal plant, it is used for many different ailments. The herb tastes sweetish-bitter and is reminiscent of celery.

Use/Preparation:

Maggi herb is particularly suitable for seasoning fish, meat, soups, dressings and sauces.

Health:

The essential oils contained have a digestive, antispasmodic, diuretic and analgesic effect. Lovage is therefore used as a remedy for digestive problems, urinary tract infections and cramps. The herb is also rich in iron, calcium and vitamins of the B group and vitamin C.

Alternatives:

A suitable alternative that is similar in taste to lovage is celery or celery leaves. Parsley, tarragon and marjoram can also be used similarly to lovage to flavour various dishes.
