The comestible parts of the octopus are the arms (tentacles) and of the calamari, the body shell (designated as a coat). Colloquially, both the calamari and the octopi or also Kraken are summarized as “octopus”.
Products labelled as “seafood” or “frutti di mare”, usually contain “octopus”. Therefore, the list of ingredients should be reviewed.
Possible cross reaction: Calamari belong to the so called invertebrates and are high in tropomyosin, the main allergen of the dust mite. You can react to calamari without ever having eaten one if you are sensitised to dust mites.
