Caraway

Caraway possesses a strong smell and tastes a little bitter. It is mainly used in Arabic, Indian and Mexican cuisines. Caraway flavors soups, vegetables, rice, legumes, stew, beef and pickles. Moreover, caraway is contained in chilli mixtures and curry.
In Eastern Europe, one uses it as a classic spice for bread, some cheese types and sausage products (caraway sausage). Caraway oil finds its use in the food industry. Various alcoholic drinks such as Brandywines and liqueurs are produced out of caraway.
Many different baked goods also contain caraway. Caraway possesses anti-swelling properties so it is also used as medicine. Before purchasing food, you should pay attention to the list of ingredients.
Possible cross reaction: Caraway has common allergenic structures with the pollen of mugwort, in the protein profilin. If one reacts allergic to or is sensitised to pollen of mugwort, allergic reactions are possible if one consumes caraway.
